INTRODUCTION – NARRATIVE
By: Luis Torres

My contribution for the PMM Music Festival is titled, “God’s Angels”, a lead sheet and guitar arrangement, based on a church song written by Alan H. Ritson, Director of Disaster Services for the Salvation Army, first in Washington D.C., and then in the State of Texas.   He coordinated relief efforts for many natural and man-made disasters throughout the United States.

He was also a musician, playing his cornet in brass groups, such as the National Capital Band of the Salvation Army, and the Dallas Temple/Irving Corps Band in Texas.  He was a piano and organ player, and wrote songs inspired by his service at disasters.
Alan was dispatched from Texas to support the Salvation Army’s relief efforts in New York City following the terrorist attack
that devastated the World Trade Center and killed thousands of innocent people on September 11, 2001 (known as 9/11).

I met Alan in person years ago during his retirement in Texas, and he claimed to me that in the middle of such devastation, an angel in the form of a little girl spoke to him. He later gave me a copy of a song that he wrote about his experiences, which I still have and used for my project.  Alan included this song in his biography titled, “Someone Cares“, published by Xulon Press Elite in the year 2020 (ISBN-9781631296918), and available through Amazon.com
Allan finished his biography few months before he passed away, or like people say in the Salvation Army, “Promoted to Glory” at age 80 on August 4, 2020.

“GOD’S ANGELS”

The lyrics of this song read as follows:

God’s Angels spoke to me as I knelt in prayer
I could feel God’s presence everywhere
They sang sweet melodies of His love for me
It brought peace I had never known before.

They said just trust in God, open up your heart
And let God be a part of your life
You’ll find the peace you need if you only believe
And your life will change for ever more.

I dedicate the arrangement of Alan H. Ritson’s song not only to his children, relatives, and friends, but to those who claim angelic visions like his, appearing in the middle of destruction, human suffering and despair.  Alan believed what he saw and was determined to write a book about it before he died.
Honestly, I believe him too.
